HOTTTT JAPANESE COUPLE: VERBAL AND YOON! Now these kats for me are LEGENDARY. VERBAL, (Producer. MC. DJ. Designer.) Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. 1/2 of M-Flo, 1/5 of TERIYAKI BOYZ, CEO of AMBUSH® DESIGN & KOZM AGENCY, Asia Pacific Creative Director for Reebok and a celebrated street fashion icon. It’s clear that the creative influence of VERBAL and wife YOON know no boundaries.
Musically, VERBAL made a name for himself in 1999 as a member of the Japanese contemporary act m-flo. Together with DJ Taku Takahashi, they racked up five studio albums over the course of seven productive years. Each of them reached the Top 10 of the Japanese charts and cemented their standing as major players in the music field.
Keen to test his abilities in a new arena, in 2005 VERBAL hooked up with other like-minded artists to set-up the super hip-hop group, the TERIYAKI BOYZ®. Made up of NIGO®, llmari and Ryo-Z from Rip Slyme, and Wise, the TERIYAKI BOYZ®’ success and popularity was immediate.
For their debut album, the Def Jam release Beef Or Chicken, the list of contributors read like a who’s who of musical icons. The line-up included Daft Punk, DJ Shadow, Mark Ronson, The Neptunes and Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys. Also familiar to many music fans will be the tracks Tokyo Drift and Cho LARGE, which featured on the 2006 film The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift.
Another of VERBAL’s allies is YOON, his partner and comrade on this collaboration project. Since meeting up at university in Boston , the couple have gone from strength-to-strength. Using YOON’s graphic design skills, the duo set-up the design studio AMBUSH® DESIGN in 2002. From here they’ve designed CD artwork, clothing, jewellery and collaborated with brands such as A Bathing Ape. More recently they’ve thrown high profile parties for the likes of Jeremy Scott and Jenson Button.
